In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rathmines like this:
Rathmines and Rathgar, township, in co. and 1½ mile S. of Dublin, 1714 ac., pop. 24,370; P.O., T.O., called Rathmines; 1 Bank.
