In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Athy like this:

Athy.-- township and market-town with ry. sta., co. Kildare, on the river Barrow and a branch of the Grand Canal, 44¾ miles SW. of Dublin by rail, 961 ac., pop. 4181; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day Tuesday. It is an ancient town, and has one of the best grain markets in Ireland.
