In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Carncastle like this:
Carncastle, coast par. and hamlet, E. co. Antrim, 4 miles NW. of Larne, 9723 ac., pop. 1321; P.O.; has ruins of a castle amid fine scenery.
