In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bog of Allen like this:

Allen, Bog of, a bog of great but undefined extent, Leinster. The name generally applies to the whole series of bogs between the Slievebroom mountains and the parallel of Mullingar, and specially to the east broken portion of the series, which lies in the NW. of co. Kildare, and thence expands W. into King's co.
