In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Belturbet like this:
Belturbet, market town, Drumlane and Annagh pars., N. co. Cavan, on river Erne, 5 miles W. of Belturbet Junction sta. and 9 miles NW. of Cavan -- township, 1141 ac., pop. 1807; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday. It stands on the property of the Earl of Lanesborough.
