In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Castleconnell like this:

Castleconnell, vil. with ry. sta., Stradbally par., in co. and 8 miles NE. of Limerick, on river Shannon, pop. 330; P.O., T.O.; resorted to for the angling on the Shannon. Several fine seats are in the vicinity; also, the ruins of a castle of the O'Briens, kings of Munster.
