While the parish-level tables from the census list numbers of persons and numbers of houses, they provide no evidence on overcrowding. This section of the database contains measures of housing density, i.e. the relationship between the number of rooms in each dwelling and the number of persons. These were first gathered in 1891, when over-crowding was defined as over 2 persons per room. By 1931 this threshold had dropped to 1.5 persons, and by 1961 to 1 person per room.
From 1951 onwards, the census also gathered information on 'amenities': whether households had access to baths, to WCs and so on. This information is held in another section of the database.
