Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Killarney, Lakes of

Killarney, Lakes of, near Killarney, co. Kerry, lying round the base of lofty mountains, and widely celebrated for their romantic scenery. They consist of the Lower Lake, or Lough Leane, 5 miles long and 2½ miles in average breadth: the Middle, or Muckross Lake, 2 miles by 1 mile, and separated from the Lower Lake by a narrow peninsula and two islands; and the Upper Lake, 2½ miles by ¾ mile, the most beautiful of the three, and connected with the Lower and Middle Lakes by a narrow channel, known as the Long Range, about 2½ miles long. The shores and islands are richly adorned with woods, and the arbutus and other evergreens flourish here luxuriantly.
